Zoological Manager
Zoological Manager - Ectotherms About the Role A pivotal member of the Ellen Trout Zoo, assuming a leadership role in overseeing the management and care of the reptiles, amphibians and fishes. This position involves supervising staff, coordinating daily operations, implementing husbandry practices, and collaborating with veterinarians and conservation partners. The position will play an important role in the zoo’s participation in the Louisiana pine snake conservation program. This individual plays a crucial role in advancing the zoo’s mission of education, conservation, and public engagement.
What You Will Do Supervision of Zookeepers • Monitors and evaluates performance of zookeepers. Establishes goals for zookeepers. Plans schedules and work assignments. • Responsible for acquisition of supplies and resources. • Trains, mentors and evaluates zookeepers. Helps employees resolve job related problems. • Ability to recognize exceptional performance and reward employees when appropriate. • Ability to recognize employee deficiencies and take corrective action in consultation with supervisors. • Ability to effectively write reports and other documents clearly, logically, accurately and professionally. • Plays a key role in evaluating zookeeper applications for open positions and a key role in selecting final candidates. • Regularly reports activities involving animals, employees and facilities to curatorial staff. Animal Welfare and Care • Supervises and monitors animal introductions and animal restraint. Assists in animal transfer activities. • Understanding of animal natural history and terminology. • Under the direction of veterinarians and/or curators administer medications or treatment as needed. • Possess working knowledge of animal training, enrichment and welfare. Participate in animal welfare assessment activities. • Ability to effectively communicate to supervisors and veterinary staff observations of animal behavior and health condition. • Ability to record animal behavioral, training and enrichment activities and health conditions in daily records. • Prepares animal diets which may vary widely among taxa. • Knowledgeable about the care and husbandry of venomous reptiles and invertebrates, crocodilians and large constrictors. • Ability to set reptile eggs in incubators and monitor temperatures and humidity for successful incubation. • Oversee operations of the offsite Louisiana pine snake breeding center.

This position is an essential service position and may require providing services during emergency situations. Pay: $23.35 per hour.
